24m Multicat Retrofit From a Digital Twin

A working vessel can rarely afford to leave service so someone can measure it. We captured the vessel as a survey-grade digital twin in a single attendance, then planned the retrofit entirely on that data — no return visits, no measuring under scaffold, no guesswork from outdated drawings.

The Brief

Measure Once,
Engineer With Confidence.

An operator needed to plan a systems retrofit on a 24m multicat workboat, but the original drawings no longer reflected the vessel after years of modifications, equipment upgrades and operational changes. Measuring conventionally would have meant taking the vessel off the water and sending a team aboard with tapes and laser measures — costly, slow and still prone to error in confined machinery spaces.

Isca proposed capturing the vessel once, accurately, as a 3D point cloud. From that single dataset, every downstream engineering decision could be made against the real as-built condition rather than against drawings that had drifted from reality.

The scan was processed into a registered point cloud containing approximately 240 million points with a registration tolerance of ±3 mm, sufficient to model machinery clearances, cable routes and pipework modifications without physical re-measurement.

Key Figures

The Numbers That
Drove the Work.

The value of a digital twin is dimensional certainty. These figures define the capture scope and the retrofit envelope it enabled, giving the design team a measured basis for installation planning rather than relying on outdated vessel drawings.

What the Client Received.

01

Registered Point Cloud

Full as-built point cloud of the captured spaces, registered and cleaned, supplied in industry-standard formats suitable for engineering and survey workflows.

02

Digital Twin Model

A dimensionally accurate 3D model of the vessel areas relevant to the retrofit, suitable for clash detection and installation planning.

03

Clash & Clearance Report

Identification of conflicts between proposed new equipment and existing structure, services and maintenance access routes.

04

Retrofit Arrangement

Proposed installation arrangement for the new systems, developed against verified as-built geometry.

05

Installation Notes

Practical guidance for the yard on access, sequencing and constraints identified during modelling.

06

Verified Dimensions Pack

Key dimensional extracts from the digital twin, replacing unreliable legacy drawings for the retrofit scope.

How It Ran

Capture to Retrofit Plan.

01 / CAPTURE

Single Attendance Scan

The vessel was scanned during a single attendance, capturing the relevant spaces without requiring lengthy downtime.

02 / PROCESS

Register & Model

The raw scans were registered into a unified point cloud and converted into a structured digital twin.

03 / ENGINEER

Clash & Route

The proposed retrofit was developed against the twin, allowing clashes and clearances to be resolved before fabrication.

04 / HANDOVER

Yard-Ready Pack

The installation team received verified dimensions and an arrangement package they could build to with confidence.

Why Isca

The Engineering
Reasoning Behind It.

01

We Close the Loop

A surveyor hands you a point cloud and leaves. A naval architect hands you a report and leaves. Isca captures the data, engineers on it and supports delivery through the entire process.

02

Data Before Assumptions

Every engineering decision is based on measured geometry rather than drawings that may no longer represent the vessel.

03

Minimal Vessel Downtime

A single scanning attendance replaces multiple measurement visits, allowing engineering to continue off-site.

04

De-Risked Installation

Clashes identified during modelling cost nothing to resolve. Clashes discovered during installation cost time, money and programme certainty.
